Win AI Search With GEO

0:00|0:00

Search is shifting from blue links to AI answers, and businesses that aren’t cited in those summaries risk becoming invisible. This episode breaks down Generative Engine Optimization with a practical 30-minute blueprint: create llms.txt, front-load key facts, and audit your share of voice across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.

Chapter 1

The Zero Click Shift and the AI Citation War

Grant Calloway

Back on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, when a broker wanted to make a dead stock look hot, they would start churning orders. Wash trading, spinning volume, trying to trick the room into thinking there was actual depth where there was only smoke. And for twenty years, that is pretty much how search engine optimization worked. You stuffed enough keywords into a page, built a few suspect backlinks, and boom, you were sitting pretty on page one of Google.

Grant Calloway

Well, I am telling you today, that tape is dead. It is over. Right now, according to industry research, sixty percent of web searches end without a single click. Think about that. Sixty percent. People are not scrolling through ten blue links anymore. They are opening ChatGPT or Perplexity and typing out full, conversational questions. The average Google query used to be four words. Four words! Now, on generative AI search engines, the average query is twenty three words long. Users are laying out their exact situation, their location, their budget, and asking the AI to give them one solid answer.

And if you are sitting there holding position number one on organic Google, thinking your deal flow is safe, you are in for a brutal wake up call. When an AI synthesizes a recommendation, it does not give the user a choice of ten links to explore. It picks three or four sources, summarizes them, and hands down a verdict. If your business is not cited in that summary, you do not exist. You are completely invisible to a prospect who was literally standing there with their credit card out.

And here is the kicker, the piece that keeps small business owners up at night without even realizing it. You might be doing everything right on paper, but you are caught in what I call the invisible block trap. A recent technical report from LLMrefs pointed out that platforms like Cloudflare recently changed their default settings to automatically block AI web crawlers. So if your website uses Cloudflare for security or performance, there is a very high chance your server is silently bouncing bots like ChatGPT User right at the front door. You think you are protected from hackers, but you actually just locked out the biggest recommendation engine on the planet.

Chapter 2

The Thirty Minute GEO Blueprint for Small Businesses

Grant Calloway

So, how do we fix this? How do we adapt to Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO? It is not about hiring some high priced consultant to game a brand new algorithm. It is about restructuring your facts so an AI model can parse them in milliseconds. And you can do the heavy lifting in about thirty minutes.

Grant Calloway

First step, you need to create a file called llms dot txt and place it right in your root web directory. Think of it like a concise company prospectus you hand directly to an analyst. It is a plain text markdown file that outlines your services, your physical locations, your pricing tiers, and your target customer. When an AI crawler hits your site, it does not want to wrestle with complex JavaScript or fancy interactive sliders. It wants clean, plain text that tells it exactly who you are and what you charge.

Grant Calloway

Second step, you have to execute what I call the thirty percent front loading rule. Research on AI search behavior shows that forty four point two percent of all LLM citations come from the first thirty percent of a web page's text. Let me say that again because it is crucial. According to Control ALT Digital, forty four point two percent of all LLM citations originate from the top thirty percent of a document. If you bury your actual answer, your pricing, or your core value proposition under five paragraphs of narrative fluff, the retrieval model gives up and moves on to your competitor. Put the verdict right at the top of the page in direct answer format, then provide the context below it.

Grant Calloway

Third step, run a Share of Voice audit this afternoon. It costs nothing. Take ten high intent prompts that a real customer in your city would ask, like "who is the most reliable commercial electrician in Austin for a office remodel?" Run those ten prompts through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. See how many times your brand is cited versus your top three local rivals. If your competitors are getting named seven times out of ten and you are getting zero, you know exactly where your deal flow is leaking.

Grant Calloway

Look, at the end of the day, GEO is not magic. It is just clean, fact dense accounting. The floor of search has moved from volume to precision. Get your files indexed, put your core facts right at the top of the page, and make your business too clear and too reliable for the machines to ignore. That is how you win the tape in 2026. Thanks for listening, talk soon.
